Current year 9s will be the first cohort to sit the new GCSE modern foreign languages exams (first teaching from 2024 and first assessment from 2026). The AQA French and Edexcel French specifications have been accredited and the Eduqas draft French spec is currently being amended. The draft AQA German, Edexcel German, AQA Spanish and Edexcel Spanish specifications have been published and are awaiting approval by Ofqual. Sample assessment materials are also available from the exam boards' websites.

The major changes to the MFL GCSEs are the use of English for all instructions and the addition of tasks on dictation and reading aloud. Comprehension texts can contain only 2% of words from outside the vocabulary lists, and those items from outside the word lists must be glossed.
