What's the difference between a noun and an expanded noun phrase?

Nouns and expanded noun phrases are essential elements in English grammar. Nouns name things, such as 'butterfly' or 'caterpillar', whilst expanded noun phrases provide more detail by adding adjectives. For instance, 'the blue butterfly' and 'the enormous caterpillar' are expanded noun phrases that offer a richer description. Understanding this difference helps pupils create more vivid and precise writing.

This lesson plan builds children's confidence in identifying and using nouns and expanded noun phrases through a structured approach. It starts with recognising simple nouns, then progresses to creating sentences with nouns, and finally introduces the concept of expanded noun phrases.
