How to use this Christmas acrostic poem resource
For KS1 (Years 1-2), start by using the PowerPoint to introduce what acrostic poems are and how they work. Use the templates with word banks to scaffold their writing, helping them select descriptive words for each letter. Encourage your pupils to illustrate their completed poems with festive drawings, combining literacy with creative art.
For KS2 (Years 3-6), revisit the concept using the PowerPoint, then challenge your class with the templates without word banks. Push them to incorporate poetic techniques such as alliteration, similes and rich descriptive language. This Christmas acrostic poem activity is ideal for developing their independent vocabulary and creative writing skills.
Across both key stages, try beginning with a collaborative brainstorming session to build Christmas vocabulary together. Model creating an acrostic poem on your interactive whiteboard, then give pupils time to draft, peer-review and share their work. Display the finished Christmas acrostic poems as part of your festive classroom display to celebrate their efforts.

Christmas acrostic poems
An acrostic is a poem. Try saying ‘a-cros-tic’ out loud. An acrostic poem is simple but it can tell you so much!
You can make your acrostic poem about anything you like. One thing you should know is every acrostic poem has a little mystery.
Look closer and you’ll see a hidden pattern you can follow to solve this mystery.
Every line begins with a letter. Put the letters together and you make a word.
Look at the example below and find the acrostic word made from the beginning letters of each line.
