Why sentence builders work in the classroom

Sentence builders are effective because they help children break down sentences into their basic parts, understand how different word classes function and learn to construct more sophisticated sentences through thoughtful word choices.

For example:

'The cat is sleeping' can become… 'The fluffy orange cat is sleeping peacefully on the windowsill.'

'The car is moving' can become… 'The sleek red sports car is moving swiftly along the coastal highway.'

'The river is flowing' can become… 'The crystal-clear mountain river is flowing rapidly through the rocky canyon.'

These examples show how adding adjectives, adverbs and location details creates more vivid and engaging sentences.

How to use sentence builders with your class

Start by having children select a sentence strip and copy it onto their sentence builder template. They'll then brainstorm appropriate adjectives, adverbs, and location words, using the original sentence for the noun and verb. With these words, children construct an improved version of the sentence, writing it in the space provided.

For KS1:

  • Begin with simple noun-verb sentences like 'The dog runs' and model adding one adjective at a time
  • Use physical props or pictures to help children visualise the sentences they're building
  • Incorporate actions and movement to help children understand verbs and adverbs

For KS2:

  • Challenge children to include multiple adjectives with correct ordering (size, age, colour)
  • Introduce more sophisticated vocabulary choices using thesauruses
  • Focus on using precise adverbs to enhance meaning
  • Encourage children to add prepositional phrases for location and time

Differentiation strategies for sentence builders

Lower ability

  • Provide word banks for each part of speech
  • Use colour coding to identify different sentence components
  • Work in small guided groups with teacher support

Higher ability

  • Encourage the use of sophisticated conjunctions to combine sentences
  • Challenge children to include figurative language
  • Ask children to explain their word choices and the effect on the reader
