Introduce magic square puzzles to your students with this set of activities, including a standard 3×3 magic square, Dürer's 4×4 magic square, and algebraic magic squares (to practise collecting like terms).

For each type of magic square puzzle, students will need to find the missing numbers (or algebraic equations) in the square grid and identify the magic number for each puzzle. These number puzzles are great for developing students’ problem-solving skills and are a fun way to start your maths lessons.

How to use the magic square puzzles

This resource includes a PowerPoint and printable magic squares worksheet. Use the activities all at once or keep them as a bank of starter puzzles. Students can complete the printable puzzles via the worksheet or you can display them on the board to be completed as a class or using mini-whiteboards.
