Act 1 summary notes
- Reverend Parris is in the “small upper bedroom” of his home in Salem in the spring of 1692.
- He is a widower in his mid-forties, and his house is clean but sparse.
- He believes that he is not very welcome in Salem – he has tried hard to fit in.
- Locals are described as having many issues with each other, so an accusation of witchcraft was used like a weapon.
- Rev. Parris is kneeling at his daughter’s bedside, praying, and crying for her.
- It is unclear what is wrong with her – he is afraid witchcraft/devil is going to be blamed.
- Parris’s 17-year-old niece, Abigail Williams, comes into the room and Parris confronts her about what happened in the forest.
- Abigail introduces Susanna Walcott, who works for the doctor, and she claims that the doctor has no idea what is wrong with Betty (Parris’ daughter).
- Parris tells her to tell the doctor to keep researching – he does not want the cause to be labelled as witchcraft.
Quotations from Act 1

“Put out all thought of unnatural causes here.”
“The rumour of witchcraft is all about.”
