Using idioms in creative writing resource

Ideal for students looking to expand their linguistic skill set, this targeted resource explores how idioms can add richness and depth to both descriptive and persuasive writing pieces.

The resource is designed to take students through learning about idioms to applying this knowledge in sentence form, then developing this use in creative writing responses in the style of GCSE English Language Paper 1 sample questions.

This resource could be twinned with 'Using Idioms in Non-Fiction Writing' which has recently been published.

Key features of this resource

This focused resource begins with a set of idioms students may recognise and some they may not know. Students are guided to give a definition for each idiom and then apply this knowledge by using one of the idioms to complete a range of sentences in the second activity.

The next activity requires students to plan and write their choice of one of two exam-style questions based on those that can be found in GCSE English Language Paper 1 Section B (the writing section). Students can either write the opening to a story or complete a descriptive piece on the image included in the resource.
