How to use this resource
This resource is a colourful and clear spotter's guide for use whilst out and about exploring ponds. A super outdoor learning activity suitable for all age groups. Children can use the worksheet to explore how pond life develops and evolves, particularly in relation to tadpoles and frogs.
Included are a comprehensive range of EYFS, KS1 and KS2 activities to deepen knowledge around living things and their habitats while strengthening both independent study and collaborative group work skills. These activities are also useful for outdoor learning, Outdoor Classroom Day in May and November and for encouraging a love and respect for the natural environment.

- Pond creature movement game
Encourage children to move like different pond animals:
- Wiggle like a tadpole
- Hop like a frog
- Glide like a pond skater
- Flutter like a dragonfly
This supports physical development, listening skills and understanding of animal movement.
2. Sort and group pond creatures
Ask children to sort the pond life into categories such as:
- Creatures that swim
- Creatures that fly
- Plants and animals
- Creatures with legs / without legs
This develops early science and classification skills.
3. Frog life cycle sequencing
Match these stages from the frog life cycle with the pictures:
- Frogspawn
- Tadpole
- Tadpole with legs
- Froglet
- Frog
Children can place them in order and discuss how frogs change as they grow. Pictures are provided below for this activity.
