What is a revision clock?

A revision clock is a visual study tool that is divided into 12 equal segments, like the face of a clock. Each segment represents either a section of a unit/topic or a specific time allocation for revision. This structured approach helps students systematically break down their revision into manageable chunks whilst maintaining a clear overview of their progress.

Why use a revision clock?

The clock format is particularly effective because it:

  • Provides a clear visual representation of revision topics
  • Helps students maintain focus by working in defined segments
  • Encourages balanced coverage of all subject areas
  • Makes revision more manageable and less overwhelming

Teachers can adapt revision clocks to suit different subjects, year groups and ability levels. They are especially valuable for exam preparation, where students need to review multiple topics efficiently and systematically.

How to use a revision clock

Following these simple steps will help students create and use their revision clocks effectively, maximising their study time and improving the retention of key information.

  1. Start with a blank clock template: Print out the revision clock with 12 equal segments.
  2. Choose your topic or subject: Decide what subject area or unit to revise.
  3. Break down the content: Divide revision material into 12 logical sections that will fit into the clock segments.
  4. Label each segment: Write clear headings or subtopics in each segment of the clock.
  5. Set your time intervals: Decide how long to spend on each segment - typically 5 minutes per segment for a one-hour revision session.
  6. Work clockwise: Begin with segment 1 and work your way around the clock systematically.
  7. Take brief notes: Write key points, formulas or facts in each segment - keep it concise and focused.
  8. Use colour coding: Highlight important information or categorise different types of content using different colours.
  9. Review and revise: Once complete, students can use the clock to test themselves by covering segments and recalling information.

It’s important to take short breaks between revision sessions to keep focused and maintain concentration, making the technique more effective.
