What is Remembrance Day?
While it was originally conceived to mark the end of the First World War, Remembrance Day (also known as Armistice Day) is now a commemoration of all those in the armed forces who have fought and died for their country. Traditionally, Commonwealth countries observe a two-minute silence on Remembrance Day, and a ceremony on Remembrance Sunday sees British royals and the Prime Minister lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in London.
How to use this resource
This Remembrance Day quiz works brilliantly as a discussion starter in the days leading up to 11 November. You might use it to gauge your students' prior knowledge, as a recap after teaching about Remembrance Day, or as part of a wider assembly or lesson on conflict and remembrance. Form tutors will find it particularly useful as a meaningful registration activity that takes just 10-15 minutes, helping to mark the occasion even without a dedicated lesson slot. The questions encourage students to think critically about why we continue to observe this important day of reflection.
