What are dingbats?
Dingbats (also known as rebus puzzles) are visual word puzzles that combine pictures, words, letter positioning and formatting to represent well-known phrases or sayings. For example, the word 'STAND' written above the letter 'I' would represent 'I understand'. They're brilliant for developing lateral thinking and encouraging students to look at language in creative ways.
How to use this resource
Primary teachers can use these Christmas dingbats as a fun morning starter, an engaging lesson filler or a rewarding end-of-term activity that keeps children thinking right up to the holidays.
Form tutors will find them perfect for tutor time, whilst subject teachers can drop them into lessons as a settling activity or brain break. Display the PowerPoint on your board and work through the puzzles together as a class, or print the worksheets for students to tackle independently or in pairs. Either way, you'll have an instant activity that requires zero prep but delivers maximum engagement.
